Released as the lead single from I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You (1967), Aretha Franklin’s rendition of “Respect” features flipped gendered lyrics, the iconic “R-E-S-P-E-C-T” spelling out by backing vocalists, and a call-and-response “sock it to me” bridge. Produced by Jerry Wexler with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 and Black Singles charts, earned Franklin two Grammy Awards in 1968, and became both a feminist anthem and civil-rights rallying cry.
